DESCRIPTION:Opera in Darling and AGL Opera’s new production of Mozart’s outwardly comical masterpiece Cosi fan Tutte or the School of Lovers\, like its predecessors Don Giovanni and Die Entführung aus dem Serail\, aims to charm\, to seduce and to make us reconsider what it means to be human. \n \nAs one can expect from the pioneer of “opera alla breve” in South Africa\, the original work has been condensed to its musical substance\, performed by half a dozen young singers\, and accompanied not by an orchestra but by a pianist only. It again has a present-day story line and setting without stage set and costumes; props reduced to a bare minimum. Ideal for a town in South Africa called Darling. However\, Opera in Darling’s previous productions grew legs that took them to Oudtshoorn\, Mossel Bay\, Greyton\, Stellenbosch\, Vredenburg\, Elgin and London\, to a cutting- edge theatre\, the Tricycle. \nThe new opera is set in a cosy lady’s bar in a West Coast seaside resort. The emotions and devotions of lovers are challenged by the bar-tender\, who believes that women are not to be trusted when it comes to love. Intimate performances welcoming performers and audience … the hosts proudly open their homes adding true South African hospitality. \nThis year Voorkamerfest partners with The Fugard Theatre\, Kyknet\, Wesgro\, Rupert Musiekstigting & Darling businesses. \nThe 13th annual Voorkamerfest in darling took place during the first weekend in September 2018\, graced with early Spring flowers blooming in every surrounding field and reserve. Regular and new fans were enthralled and dazzled by the diverse line-up and comeback after a 2 year break. \nBe prepared for this 14th edition – coming to you up close and personal with yet another brilliant line-up of South African brewed talent & entertainment! \nWhat a privilege to partner with The Fugard Theatre\, Kyknet\, Wesgro\, Rupert Musiekstigting & Darling businesses – making it possible for Voorkamerfest to continue working towards expanding the impact of the performing arts in our local community and further afield. \nAside from essential funding needed in order for the Voorkamerfest to survive\, this community-run festival can only succeed if key residents and performers are willing to give of their time\, talent\, energy and spirit – these being our local theatre hosts\, taxi drivers and of course our treasured back stage worker-bees! Thanks to all\, for your commitment. \nThis small west coast village touches many who visit with its laid back\, friendly atmosphere. Many\, including the legendary satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys have fallen in love with the hamlet and never left! Pieter-Dirk’s motivation is integral to the success of this festival…also as patron of The Darling Trust…. Which receives a portion of ticket sales for its projects. \nEach year the village comes together and 21 home owners throughout Darling volunteer their homes to host the theatre production – a warm Darling welcome awaits you… this being the charm and secret ingredient of The Voorkamerfest – the coming together and sharing of live theatre performances under the umbrella of the arts! \nThe mechanics of the festival is equally astounding! You never know which productions you will see until you have arrived! Seven routes host three acts that you will see at random – transported in true South African style by local taxis. \nThe Voorkamerfest is unique and truly magical. Dis Christine se 50ste verjaarsdag en dis die tweeling se geskenk aan haar. Hoekom moet Anel en Bianca altyd inmeng? ‘n Bord sushi sou net so goed gewees het. Sy weet hulle is familie\, maar hulle weet ook sy’s bang vir vlieg. \nTerwyl die susters die tyd verwyl met kaarte\, boeke\, cappuccino’s en vlymskerp tonge\, word lewenskeuses uitmekaar getrek en ou koeie opgegrawe. Want hier sit hulle nou. Die vlug is vertraag en sy’s hoog op kalmeerpille. Bianca is vas oortuig sy’t hulle verlore ma gesien. Anel praat met ‘n aantreklike man. Christine maak haar oë toe. Sy droom van stilte. Absolute stilte. Sy wens partykeer haar man en seuns wil net verdwyn. Sy mag dit nie dink nie\, maar… sê nou maar\, sê nou maar Thailand is die antwoord. Sal hulle ooit daar kom?
